NAIN Podcast Series: An Interview with Sarah Elaine Eaton
For the third in this podcast series from the National Academic Integrity Network, Dr Yvonne Kavanagh (South East Technological University / NAIN Steering Committee member) interviews Associate Professor Sarah Elaine Eaton (Werkland School of Education, University of Calgary).
In this episode, Professor Eaton talks about how she became so involved in, and passionate about, the field of academic integrity, the importance of identifying and tackling ‘the wicked questions’ collaboratively, and the necessity for higher education leaders to regard academic integrity as an area which ‘needs to be embedded in budgets at operational level as well as in research projects’ , i.e. long term, sustainable investment. She also makes the case that academic integrity is not only about student conduct, but also about ethics and promoting ethical behaviour on the part of all stakeholders. She further exemplifies this point by referring to restorative justice approaches which may provide a redemptive route for students to repair the harm they have done through engagement in academic misconduct, to enable them to both learn from the experience and to stay in the learning community, with the hope that they will then act with intentionality in a different way going forward.
We hope this conversation inspires further conversations and innovative thinking!
